Recently, food prices has been rising at astronomical level and I think it is caused by many factors. First thing is the globalized food market and the rising gas prices, making shipping a lot more expensive. Another thing is the increase taxation on food to pay off our "social programs" such as health care and welfare, etc. But I think one of the main causes was something to do with too much processed foods.
I am taking an anthropology class and most people in our culture are using only about four types of crops. Corn, wheat, rice, and potatoes and we are using these crops mainly for processed food. Look what is in those processed food - mostly corn and the more is being used, the less supply of corn, which means the higher the price. Anything that eats corn will rise in price, along with wheat and potatoes, which means most animals. It looks like that ever since the advent of processed foods in the 1980s, the price of food has skyrocketed and it looks like food is not getting any better.
The only way for us to lower the food prices is to buy less processed foods and more natural foods. Natural foods are a lot more healthier for you to eat than processed food. Each time you buy a bag of potato chips, that decreases the supply for potatoes, which will higher the price of potatoes. Now when people buy less processed foods such as potatoes chips, the supply of potato chips will be higher which means the prices are going to drop.
A good way to also make food prices drop is to start farming in more traditional farms. You can plant your own food for free, and you can make homemade food. It is a lot healthier and it has a lot less preservatives than the processed food. Processed food and food from major corporate farms are full of pesticides and other chemical; with your traditional farm, it is just pure food. Farmers market are a great way to sell your food with a lower price. That will also give people an incentive to live in small towns and that will bring back the dying small farm towns, which will raise the economy. Even the horticultural society is not bad; planting your own backyard garden might be the way to do. The horticultural society is actually worth the money - you will create 20 calories of food for about 1 calorie burn doing work. Driving a tractor makes you fat. For 1 calorie of work , you only make about 0.1 of a calorie of food. But driving a tractor makes things easier - I don't have anything against that John Deere.
So I suggest to you, the next time you come to the grocery store, but the natural foods for crying out loud, like it is a farmers market. And try to take up the farming lifestyle - don't make fun of it. It was one of our most sucessful societies that was popular for about thousands of years. It worked.
