Facebook is not going to be a social revolution - I think it is a fad and I think it probably ruined the way people interacted with each other, including myself. Facebook is a helpful tool for some things such as finding out who is single and who is taken, and maybe keeping in touch with your old friends and distant relatives, but it don't look like a replacement for the more traditional methods of socialization. Most people use the phone - even though we are switching to cell phones and most people TALK on the phone - which I think is the quickest way to communicate. Quicker than texting and sexting, etc.
For a while, MySpace was the cool site. The music and video section were great, and it had a great concept of a social networking site. But it seemed like that MySpace became a home for spam and whores, and the MySpace empire collapsed. I think MySpace is still cool, but this social entertainment concept made it flop big time. MySpace has died after the Tea Party Movement around 2010 and it looks like Facebook is dying as well.
Facebook for a while was an elitist, social networking site. It was for the cool people and it knew what it was talking about. For a while, it was a home for the clean cut, college bound, screwed on teens and twenty somethings, but now it basically opened up to mom, grandpa, Uncle Bill, Cousin Jimmy, and your boss. Yes, your boss, your principal, your teacher, and worse of all, your mom! But that is not the only thing - here are a few other things that are killing off Facebook.
1. The like button - first it was a button to show you like something like a status update. Now, the like button has turned into more of a social bookmarking button, creating a black hole for the whole internet. This is facebook imperalism, claiming all sites to Facebook.
2. The connect with Facebook - the concept is good for the quick sign in, but it is Facebook imperalism and all it will get you is spam, spam, and spam.
3. Ads - every fricken thing has an fan page, er like page and your news feed is filled with advertisements. Facebook has more ads than any other site on the internet in my opinion.
4. Apps are boring - the apps used to be cool and fun, like the old likeness, blah blah blah. But now they are prepackage clones of each other.
5. Facebook gamers - Facebook is social networking site; not a site to play Farmville, Fishville, Cityville, Pet Society. And worse of all...it sucks money out of you.
6. Profile sucks - the old profile from 2009 was good. You can personalize your interests and reveal your true self. Now, your profile is a cluttered mess of the fan pages you like.
7. Demographic change - Facebook was for the youth such as Generation Y and Generation Z, not for the Generation X and the Silent Generation, even the GI generation.
8. Facebook and Twitter are adult things - Facebook and Twitter are advertised more for adult stuff, so it looks like it turned out to be the establishment.
9. Annoying people - I rather not have Uncle Jim or whoever bugging you on Facebook. It has now seems to be the replacement of e-mail and IM. Social networking is starting to become the establishment and it is time for a new wave of online communication.
10. Spam, spam, spam, spam. It looks like you are spammed with more bots and viruses than anything.
It looks like the Facebook is starting to lose it's luster. The dinosaurs of the internet such as eBay and Amazon will still be there, and I think YouTube is getting better and better, but Facebook is on the way out. Social networking is still going to exist, but I think a newer, more hip form of social networking should be implicated.
