I always like to make predictions and this is what I predict what music is going to be like in the near future, most likely in the '10s and the '20s. Music goes through spells like everything else, and I think music trends are based on the cycles of morality, like everything. Think about the 1980s, everything was starting to have a synth based, high tech, corporate sound. When the 1990s come around, music was starting to become more darker, more alternative, and more based on underground genres of music such as hip-hop, country, and alternative rock. Dance music was popular throughout the late 1970s and throughout most the 1980s, and into the early 1990s, then it' popularity has declined. Now, dance music is starting to return on the charts.
In the future, the pattern is going to continue. Now, we are having a lot of electropop-dance sounding music, similar to the style of the 1980s. Country music is starting to creep back and rock and hip-hop music is starting to decline. Hip-hop is currently in a more alternative state, and it is starting to go into the "grunge phase" just like rock music was in the early 1990s. Rock music is not as glamorized anymore and it is going through the same effects as jazz become in the 1940s, turning into a more sophisticated, artful bebop sound. I am predicting that we will be seeing this cheaper, recession electropop sound throughout most of the early 2010s, most likely up to around 2013 or 2014. Then music is going to change as the economy recovers.
I can see a more modest sound coming in the 2010s. For a while, everything was a "crap was good" sound, but a rebellion is going to be coming. When our economy rises, you may hear a more corporate, polished sound in music. You are going to see a lot more teen idols and new pop stars. Pop music will have a more cleaner sound, less rap, and more focus on song structure once again. Ballads might return by the middle of the decade. Country music is going to rise throughout the decade as Americana and conservatism makes a comeback. A classic country and maybe a bluegrass-folk sound in music might comeback by the latter part of the decade. Dance music is going to rise and many styles of dance music are going to be popular. Electronic music will rise this decade, but it will have a more polished sound and not as "scenexcore" as it was in the 2000s. Trance music will be mainstream by about 2017-2019 and that will continue in the 2020s. I can see a jazz revival in music as well, most likely merging with something like electronica and the like. Hip-hop and rock music will be on a downhill slide and will be in an alternative state. A New Jack Swing revival might comeback about 2020. Hip-hop might creep back about the 2030s or the late 2020s when Generation Y starts running the show, but I don't think it is going to be as strong as it was in the 2000s.
Music is hard to predict but I am using patterns I see in music. It looks like we go through a more progressive sound, than a more traditional sound, and I think we are going into a more progressive, experimental era with music. The 2000s and 1990s was a more old fashioned, traditional sound in music, a lot similar to the 1960s and 1970s, and some has sounds date as far back to ancient times. Now, we are going to see a more modern, more "square" sound in music in the future.
